Yes, I’m Still Watching American Idol
American Idol Season 12’s Top 5
I promised myself I wouldn’t do it. I said that I wasn’t going to watch American Idol this season because Nicki Minaj was going to be a judge and I think she is the epitome of the word “talentless.” (Anyone who calls THIS ATROCITY music has no business judging a talent competition…but I digress.) I happened to be at home the night the auditions started, so I thought I would just watch them and see what the talent was like this year. To say that I was blown away would be a huge understatement.
This is the first year they have ever had a top 5 that was all female. (I think this was pretty much rigged to happen with all the complaints about the “White Guy With Guitar” factor regarding winners from the past (Season 7 – David Cook; Season 8 – Kris Allen; Season 9 – Lee DeWyze; Season 10 – Scotty McCreery; Season 11 – Phillip Phillips) but who knows.) In all honesty, the guys who were chosen to compete in the top 10 this season weren’t that great…so a female was pretty much guaranteed to win this year. Needless to say, I have followed the show quite frequently over the years.
This season, my favorites are Angie Miller and Candice Glover. If either of these two win, I’ll be happy. So far this year, my favorite performances on the show have been Angie’s cover of Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life” and Candice’s cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong.” Enjoy these performances in the videos below.

The Next American Idol (Judge) Is…
Who will replace the AI judges?
American Idol is one of my guilty pleasures. I’ve watched it every season since it started. I saw two of the American Idol tours (the year Taylor Hicks won and the year David Cook won). I even voted for Phillip Phillips this year and have his song Home on my iPod. If you keep up with pop culture at all, you have probably heard recently that both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will not be returning as judges for season 12 of the show. At this point it is not known if Randy Jackson will stay or follow suit. Ryan Seacrest has signed a 2 year deal to remain, so he will be hosting through at least season 13 but who knows are that.
With at least two of the three judges leaving the show, it’s time to make some changes to bring American Idol back to the juggernaut that it was when it first started back in 2002. First off, they need an “anchor” female judge who is known and loved by many (the X Factor has Britney Spears and The Voice has Christina Aguilera). Someone like Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, or even a music veteran like Carole King or Chrissie Hynde could potentially be a good fit. Next they need someone who is up and coming or really current right now – someone like Carly Rae Jepsen, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Ellie Goulding, or even Katy Perry. A music producer or someone in the industry is a must for the panel – like Jimmy Iovine, Will.i.am, or even someone like Diddy. Finally, I think they should bring back a fourth judge and have it as a “rotating” judge homecoming for AI alumni (winners and those who have had a significant impact on the show) – Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Kris Allen, David Cook, or Jordin Sparks. This would be nice because they would only be there for a week, so it wouldn’t greatly impact their touring or appearance schedules. It would also be a great way for the audience to see “where are they now” regarding their favorite former AI contestants.
As we discovered in season 9, finding the right judges can be a hit or miss process (Ellen DeGeneres?!?! Really?!?!). If you could pick, who would you like to see as the new judges for American Idol season 12?

The Finder – The Battle Continues
It’s not too late to Save The Finder!
Last month I wrote a post about the television show The Finder. The show is a spin-off of Bones and is loosely based on The Locater books by Richard Greener. The Finder premiered Thursday, January 12 at 9:00 PM EST on FOX, but on April 6 the show was given the “kiss of death” by FOX and moved to Friday nights at 8:00 PM EST. What’s so disappointing – it only ran a total of 13 episodes.
If you were not able to see any of the episodes from season one, they are currently available on Hulu. As I mentioned in my previous post, there is a fan campaign that has been created to bring the show back to FOX. It’s easy to get discouraged, but remember shows like Star Trek, Cagney & Lacey, Family Guy, Jericho, and Futurama were canceled and then brought back by the fans. Even Chuck was scheduled to be canceled after two seasons, but the fans made sure their voice was heard and the show not canceled – as an added bonus it ran for a total of five successful seasons.
By now I’m sure you’re asking what you as the disgruntled viewer can do. Here are some proactive ways you can join the fight to bring back The Finder.
- Join the “Save The Finder” Facebook page
- Like “The Finder” on Facebook
- Follow the blogs: KeepTheFinder.wordpress.com and SaveTheFinder.org
- Sign the petition – http://www.thepetitionsite.com/406/663/146/save-the-finder-on-fox/ (right now there are currently 14,935 signatures and we need more).
- Follow the cast and crew of the show on Twitter: Geoff Stults (Walter), Mercedes Masöhn (Isabel), Maddie Hasson (Willa), The Finder on FOX (the show’s official Twitter), Hart Hanson (one of the show’s creators), Richard Greener (the author of “The Locater” books), and you can also follow the “Save The Finder” group
- Participate in events suggested by the “Save The Finder” group (details on their Facebook page) like the mail a map event, PM The Finder Facebook page, and Tweeting the sponsors of the different episodes of the show
Do your part and we will show FOX we miss our beloved show and that it was a mistake for them to cancel it!

Save The Finder!
Have you ever had a television show that you really enjoyed watching only to have the network snatch it out from under your nose via cancellation? Unfortunately this has happened more often than not – Pushing Daisies, Breaking In, Reaper, and the list goes on and on. Recently FOX announced that they have decided to cancel the Geoff Stults crime dramedy The Finder. What really irritates me is they are cancelling a great show likes this while they keep garbage like Glee! I missed the first few episodes of The Finder, so I didn’t really get into the show until it was too late.
If you’ve never watched the show, it’s a spin-off of the show Bones. Geoff Stults plays Walter Sherman (A.K.A. “The Finder”) an Iraq War vet who suffered brain damage in an IED explosion. This injury gave him the ability to “find” things. With the help of his “legal advisor” Isabel (Mercedes Masöhn), his friend and bar owner Leo (Michael Clarke Duncan), and a teenage parolee named Willa (Maddie Hasson) he solves some pretty cool crimes involving everything from a meal to music. This show has everything – for you ladies you’ve got the good looking, quirky guy in Walter. Guys, we get the hot eye candy of Isabel. There is romance between Walter and Isabel. You find camaraderie (a “bromance” of sorts) between Walter and Leo. Willa adds a little rebellious teenage angst for the younger crowd (and she’s kind of cute).
If you are like me and really enjoyed the show, let FOX know how you feel! There is a “Save The Finder” Facebook group. You can also sign a petition telling the network they should renew the show. Someone has even created a Keep The Finder blog you can follow. Fans have also been asked to participate in the “Send A Map” campaign where viewers will be mailing Kevin Reilly (the president of FOX) a map of their state with the words “Save The Finder” across it. There is also a campaign to get the USA Network to pick up The Finder (go to http://www.usanetwork.com/feedback/ and at the bottom of the page there is form – fill out the form and select “USA Network Programming” under Topic then for Program under “Other” select “Suggest A Program” leaving a comment telling them how much you love The Finder on FOX and how you think USA Network should air the show). I don’t know what if anything will happen as a result of all of this, but it never hurts to try.

Grimm – Fairy Tales Meet Crime Drama
David Giuntoli plays Nick Burchkardt on the new NBC show Grimm
When it comes to television shows, I usually have two or three favorites and the rest are usually filler or background noise. Since my absolute favorite show Smallville is no longer in production, there has been kind of a television void for me. I am kind of leery about trying to get into new shows because the minute I get hooked they get cancelled (ex. Pushing Daisies and Dollhouse). I had heard about this new NBC show called Grimm and knew it had something to do with fairy tales but that’s about all I knew.
Right now if you follow Grimm on Twitter, you get the privilege of watching the premiere before everyone else. NBC will air the episode on Friday, October 28 at 9:00 PM EST. This is definitely not a family or kid’s show. Just imagine a crime drama (like CSI) mixed with fairy tales – this is what you get with Grimm. I don’t normally like a show after the first watch, but this one had me hooked.
David Giuntoli plays Nick Burckhardt, one of the remaining “Grimms.” Burckhardt is a cop who discovers that he is able to see people for who they really are – a wolf, witch, etc. The thing is he can’t tell his partner Hank (Russell Hornsby) or anyone else he has this ability. Not to spoil anything, but the first episode deals with the story of red riding hood. After watching the early preview of the first episode, I can honestly say I’m ready for more.
